  5. HARDWARE INSTALLATION
  6.  
  7. The Adaptec AHA-154XB AT-to-SCSI Host Adapter has been designed to operate 
  8. as shipped in the majority of AT class computers.  The Host adapter's 
  9. factory default settings should remain in their original positions.  The 
  10. AHA-154XB is shipped with the following settings:
  11.

  26. TO PERFORM INSTALLATION:
  27.  
  28. TURN OFF POWER TO THE SYSTEM AND EXTERNAL EQUIPMENT.
  29.  
  30. Remove the cover of your AT personal computer to expose the AT bus slots.
  31.  
  32. Locate an unused AT expansion slot in your AT system.  AT type slots can be 
  33. recognized by the fact that they have 2 edge connectors, one 62-pin and the 
  34. other 36 pin.
  35.  
  36. Remove the corresponding system expansion slot cover by turning the screw 
  37. that secures it from the top counter-clockwise.
  38.  
  39. Align the AT I/O Bus Connector on the bottom of the AHA-154X into this AT 
  40. slot.  Use the screw from the corresponding expansion slot cover to secure 
  41. the AHA-154X's bracket to your AT system frame.
  42.  
  43. The SCSI bus must also be terminated correctly to ensure proper operation.  
  44. The first and last physical SCSI devices on the SCSI cable must have 
  45. terminators installed.  All other SCSI devices must have terminators 
  46. removed.  
  47.  
  48. The SCSI factory-installed Bus terminators on the AHA-154X should be removed 
  49. if and only if you attach SCSI devices to both an internal and external cable
  50. since the internal and external cable SCSI connectors are the same SCSI Bus.
  51.                                                              
  52. Attach the SCSI Bus to the host adapter and the peripherals, using either 
  53. the internal or external connector, making sure that pin 1 orientation is 
  54. maintained throughout the bus.
  55.  
  56. If the host adapter is not the first or the last unit on the cable, remove
  57. the SCSI terminators from the board.
  58.  
  59. Reassemble the system in the reverse order.
  60.  
  61. JUMPER CONFIGURATION REFERENCE 
  62.  
  63. Five sets of jumpers are located on the board to configure user-selectable 
  64. options.  Jumpers installed at the factory are shown as "(x)".  Those not 
  65. installed are shown as "o".  It should not be necessary to change the
  66. jumper settings.

  162. SOFTWARE INSTALLLATION 
  163.  
  164. Copy the files from the ASW-1410 Program diskette to the root directory of 
  165. drive C using the MS-DOS COPY command.  In order for the ASPI MS-DOS Manager
  166. files to be loaded whenever the system is booted, the CONFIG.SYS file must 
  167. contain the following DEVICE=commands:
  168.  
  169. DEVICE = ASPI4DOS.SYS
  170. DEVICE = ASPIDISK.SYS
  171.  
  172. Using any ASCII file editor, add the individual device driver commands to an 
  173. existing CONFIG.SYS file, or follow the Instructions in the MS-DOS Operations
  174. Reference Manual to create a new CONFIG.SYS file.  FAILURE TO LOAD ALL THE
  175. DEVICE DRIVERS IN THE CORRECT ORDER, CAUSES THE PROGRAM TO NOT BE INSTALLED. 
  176. The following command line options may be added to the device drivers in the
  177. CONFIG.SYS file.  (Refer to the User's Manual for details).
  178.  
  179. DEVICE = ASPI4DOS.SYS (/D) (/P<port address) (/L) (/V) (/W) (/X<speed>)
  180. (/N<bus on time>) (/F<bus off time>) (/I).
  181.  
  182. MS-DOS provides access to physical hard disk drives C and D.  You must use 
  183. the MS-DOS FDISK and FORMAT programs for drives C and D.  DO NOT use AFDISK
  184. with drive C and D.  To use a hard disk partitioned by AFDISK as drive C or 
  185. D, you must use AFDISK to delete the partitions, and then use MS-DOS FDISK
  186. to create new partitions.
  187.  
  188. When starting AFDISK program, it must be run from the root directory of 
  189. drive C or the AFDISK directory if an AFDISK directory was created.  When
  190. ready, type:
  191.                   
  192.              AFDISK (at the DOS prompt)
  193.  
  194. and press ENTER.  The AFDISK utility is menu driven.  Follow the directions 
  195. on the screen to partition and format the selected SCSI devices.  The AFDISK
  196. utility also includes an on-line HELP file which is accessed by pressing the 
  197. F1 key.  The AFDISK may be exited at any time without executing by pressing 
  198. the ESC key and being careful to choose the selections that do not write to 
  199. or format the disk.

  201. When the SCSI device(s) are successfully partitioned and formatted, reboot 
  202. the system.  This saves any changes made and allows use of the newly 
  203. installed disk(s) or partition(s).

  206. TERMINATION
  207.  
  208. The SCSI bus must be terminated correctly to ensure proper operation.  The 
  209. first and last physical SCSI devices on the SCSI cable must have terminators
  210. installed.  All other SCSI devices must have terminators removed.  The AHA-
  211. 154XB host adapter is usually the first device on the SCSI Bus and has 
  212. terminators installed at the factory.
